 Job Description:

As a Dog Trainer at Sherwood Barks you are responsible for instructing group puppy classes, conducting private sessions, stay & trains, training foster dogs and playing a part in ensuring the training department runs smoothly. Our facility is Force Free and all courses and private consultations are reward based, following science based methods. Your knowledge and education in dog training is considered an asset, and we are looking for an individual who is confident in front of a class, works well with others and has exceptional people skills. The group puppy classes you will instruct include course level 1, 2, 3, leash reactivity and tricks & games. Each course follows a set curriculum. This role reports firstly to the owner of Sherwood Barks (Maegan Rose), and secondly to the Head Trainer (Ashton Archer).   

Responsibilities:

• Instructing group puppy classes, working with a set curriculum, supervising playtime and helping students understand appropriate play behaviors. Puppy classes require patience and understanding as students navigate new skills and training methods.
• Working with students to help them and their dogs be successful.
• Performing private consultations, working with clients one on one for specific training   concerns or course level assessments.
• Send homework via email to all group classes and private consultation clients
• Responding to voicemails and emails regarding training inquiries
• You will work primarily out of the Sherwood Barks facility, but you are also expected to work on site for in-home private consultations, and outside in a variety of weather.
• Working with training class volunteers who are there to learn and provide assistance    during classes.
• Working with foster dogs in our care to train, develop basic skills and work on any    behavioral problems that may inhibit their potential to be adopted.
• Conduct stay & train sessions with clients who book through Daycare. Stay & Trains work on skills already learned via classes or private sessions. Sessions are filmed and edited to include explanations for owners to watch and practice at home. 
• Clean and ensure the training space/training office remains clean and presentable for   members of the public. 
• Answer questions and educate yourself on products sold in the store to ensure students are receiving exceptional, streamlined advice from all trainers and staff.
• Providing recommendations on course content, if needed. All course content is discussed and agreed upon by the training staff. We are open and willing to accept new ideas based on the needs of our students and new scientific research and seminars.
• Keep up to date with academic seminars and presentations via a list of accredited   professional dog trainers and certified behaviorists in the field. 
• Assist with Sherwood Barks events, as required.
• Assisting with other projects and duties, as required.  

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

• High school diploma (university degree or college diploma is considered an asset).
• Karen Pryor Academy Graduate, International School for Certified Dog Trainers Graduate, Certified Council for Professional Dog Trainers Graduate and/or Academy for Dog Trainers Graduate.
• Minimum 2 years experience working with dogs (experience working as a trainer is considered an asset)
• Knowledge and experience with positive reinforcement training (clicker training is considered an asset) 
• The job requires the ability to lift up to 50 lbs and be on your feet for most of the day
• Use of a personal vehicle with a valid class 5 drivers license.
• Knowledge of canine theory, dog health and nutrition, and dog anatomy and physiology.
• A strong candidate will have problem-solving, reasoning, time management, organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Clear and receptive verbal and written communication is required when conversing with individuals, team members, volunteers, and the public at large.
• Works well in busy, noisy, or chaotic environments.
• Comfortable with modern technology (including the use of PCs, internet programs, Microsoft products) and with learning new software. 
• Remote work is required at times.
• General kennel cleaning and maintenance, and general grooming and care of dogs.
• Must safely handle a variety of large breed dogs, weighing up to 90+ pounds, with varying strength, behaviors, and manageability.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, i.e. non-traditional business hours that require evenings and weekends. 

Location: Edmonton, AB

Reporting to: Owner, Maegan Rose 

Hours: Permanent full-time, approximately 38 hours/week. Tuesday - Saturday 

Wage: Negotiable based on individual’s qualifications
